Product Review Methodology

How Skin Candid
evaluates skincare products.

Skin Candid reviews products to help readers make better decisions—not to create artificial excitement or reward the highest-paying brand.

This methodology explains how products are selected, researched, assessed, tested, compared, recommended and re-evaluated.

Core principle

A recommendation must have a clear reason.

A product is not recommended simply because it is popular, new, expensive, highly rated or available through an affiliate programme.

Every positive recommendation should explain who the product is for, what problem it may help solve, what limitations matter and why it was selected over reasonable alternatives.

Evaluation workflow

Product reviews follow a documented process.

The depth of assessment depends on the page type, product risk and whether physical testing has occurred.

01

Product identification

The exact product, regional version, size, formula and official product page are recorded.

02

Formula research

Ingredients, claims, directions, warnings and relevant evidence are reviewed using approved sources.

03

Practical assessment

Texture, packaging, routine fit, tolerability, application and realistic use are evaluated when evidence is available.

04

Comparison

The product is compared with relevant alternatives on formula, suitability, value and practical differences.

05

Editorial decision

The recommendation category, limitations and reason for inclusion or exclusion are recorded.

06

Monitoring

Formula changes, availability, price movement, safety information and commercial relationships are checked over time.

What we evaluate

A product is more than its ingredient list.

Formula relevance

Whether the formula meaningfully supports the product’s intended use and target concern.

Evidence and claim strength

Whether marketing claims are supported, overstated, uncertain or dependent on assumptions.

Safety and suitability

Potential irritation, contraindications, allergens, pregnancy considerations and user-specific limitations.

Practical use

Texture, finish, layering, packaging, frequency, convenience and realistic routine integration.

Value

Price, size, amount used, expected duration and whether less expensive alternatives offer similar value.

Availability and regional differences

Whether the exact version is available in the target market and whether formulas differ by region.

Testing transparency

We distinguish physical testing from formula-based evaluation.

Physically tested

The product was obtained and used under documented conditions. The review states who tested it and what was observed.

Formula and documentation review

The assessment is based on ingredients, claims, directions, official documentation and available evidence rather than hands-on use.

Limited practical evidence

Some practical information may come from verified packaging, texture descriptions or trusted external sources, but this is not presented as direct testing.

Not evaluated

No recommendation should be made when the available information is too incomplete or uncertain for a responsible conclusion.

How products are obtained

The source of the product is disclosed.

A product may be purchased independently, supplied by a retailer, gifted by a brand, included in a press package or provided for a sponsored project.

How the product was obtained does not determine the conclusion. The relationship is recorded and disclosed where relevant.

Recommendation categories

Not every evaluated product receives the same editorial outcome.

Possible positive outcomes

  • Recommended
  • Recommended for a specific skin type or concern
  • Good value
  • Premium option with clear advantages
  • Useful alternative
  • Promising but limited evidence

Possible cautious or negative outcomes

  • Not recommended
  • Too irritating for the intended audience
  • Poor value compared with alternatives
  • Claims stronger than the evidence
  • Formula or regional version uncertain
  • Insufficient information for a conclusion

Best-product pages and rankings

Rankings should reflect decision logic, not a generic score.

Skin Candid does not rely on fake precision such as 9.4/10 ratings to create authority.

Audience fit

A product may be best for beginners, sensitive skin, value, texture or a specific concern without being best for everyone.

Selection logic

The page explains the criteria used and why each product occupies its category.

Trade-offs

Strengths and weaknesses remain visible. A top pick is not described as perfect.

Comparable alternatives

Relevant alternatives may be included when they better suit a different budget, texture preference or risk profile.

Affiliate governance

Commercial eligibility comes after editorial approval.

A product cannot become affiliate-eligible merely because a tracked link is available.

Editorial eligibility requires a completed evaluation, a recorded recommendation category, an editorial decision date, a commercial-relationship check and confirmation of editorial independence.

Affiliate eligibility also requires a valid retailer offer. The commercial relationship does not change the editorial conclusion.

Sponsored and gifted products

Payment or free product does not guarantee positive coverage.

Brands may not buy

  • Positive conclusions
  • Ranking position
  • Removal of accurate criticism
  • Advance approval of independent reviews
  • Suppression of material limitations

Commercial content must include

  • Clear sponsorship or gifting disclosure
  • Separation from independent editorial conclusions
  • Relevant conflict-of-interest information
  • Accurate description of what was paid for
  • Editorial control retained by Skin Candid

Formula and product changes

A review can become outdated even when the product name stays the same.

Reformulation

Ingredient changes may alter tolerability, performance, safety or the original recommendation.

Regional version

The same product name may refer to different formulas, sunscreen filters, strengths or regulatory versions.

Packaging or size change

Usability and value may change even when the core formula remains similar.

Availability change

Discontinuation, persistent stock problems or retailer changes may affect whether a recommendation remains useful.

Re-review and corrections

Product evaluations are reviewed over time.

A product may be re-evaluated when the formula, price, availability, safety information, evidence, packaging or commercial relationship changes.

Meaningful recommendation changes are recorded rather than silently overwritten. Minor formatting and readability edits may be made without changing the editorial record.
